Status Of TOPA’s Single Family Home Exemption?

The bill that would exempt tenants in “single family homes” from TOPA rights will come before the DC City Council for second reading and vote next month.

As proposed a “single family housing accommodation” would be:

  • condos or coops governed by an association
  • dwellings with one accessory unit
  • single family dwellings

The current version provides that an assignment of TOPA rights by “grandfathered” elderly or disabled tenants would not be permitted but those tenants would be able to remain in place for an additional twelve months at their same rent.
